hi this is Charles hoskinson broadcasting live from warm sunny Colorado always warm Always Sunny sometimes Colorado hello everyone today we're talking about something near and dear to my heart the fact that I have not eaten a single piece of food in four days and many of you are curious about my fast and how it works and what I do and The Rules of Engagement so forth so I figured I'd make a video about it first off I was intending on doing a 15 day fast because my record was about 13 and a half days and I said I can go further than that but I didn't realize when I said it that it would actually cross July 4th and I just realized that yesterday I said wait a minute so so I've decided to end it a little early I'm gonna end it at 11 days which is Friday next week and so when I say fast I don't mean I'm drinking juice and liquid stuff or whatever no I mean there are zero calories going at zero so it's just water I love coffee so I drink coffee matcha no calories in any of those things no sugar in any of those things and you have to drink a lot of water I'm trying to drink at least three liters or more and then you also have to keep your potassium and your sodium levels high or else you get blinding headaches and you're at risk for refeeding syndrome and other such things so these little inserts here they're usually the the tagline of snake juice but it's just stuff you pour into your water don't have any calories or sugar in it and they have potassium and they have sodium and a few other things that help you with the fast also do enzymic fasting where I take digestive enzymes with the fast and what that does is it it actually speeds up autophagy a little bit which is where your body goes around eats all the old cells so the first three days the faster always the hardest in the fast because your body is transitioning from a glucose metabolism to a keto metabolism and that transition is brutal you get headaches if you have super low energy you get irritable but then what happens is you reach a minimum and then you start feeling better and better and then eventually you get to a peak it's not quite where you started and you start deteriorating from there but slowly so I've reached my minimum yesterday doing pretty well hang on a second person's talking okay that's better have people in the office today and not used to that it's like post covets like wow people and then you start feeling better and better you get higher and higher energy and by about day five you're actually in full ketosis and you're like totally in the starvation body life cycle and you digest mostly fat a little bit of protein and your body can make the glucose it needs for the things that need glucose it's a human bodies are amazing organisms and there's a great doctor named Dr Fung he's a nephrologist in Canada that wrote a lovely book on fasting if you guys are curious about what actually happens and there's a lot of scientific papers on fasting and the effectiveness of fasting and so forth so many of you say well hang on a second here if your goal is weight loss why are you doing an extended long long long long fast it's much more effective to do intermittent fasting or short fast like one two days at most and you'll get a bigger bang for your buck especially if you do a 2-5 pattern you take two days fasting five days eating and rotate that for a while and the answer is I'm doing it not just for weight loss I'm doing it for some metabolic reasons and for some digestive reasons and so forth and just trying to get everything completely reset and turns out that a lot extended fast over seven days can help in certain cases for certain conditions so also just want to show everybody that it's possible 11 days is no joke after you do more than seven days there's something called refeeding syndrome whereas if you eat the wrong way when you start refeeding yourself it can cause you to have problems up to and including death and so it's a rare side effect but it's something you want to avoid and so that's why you do the sodium potassium during and then there's a way you break the fast if you're curious about it there's a 30 minute video that I'll post on Twitter that they actually kind of go through the step-by-step Guides of what breaking a fast should look you take it slow oh and then you have some fun with it so anyway that's the story and I'll probably do another update on the fast right towards the end about nine days ten days in now a lot of doctors and medical people who follow me and they're probably curious about what actually happens under the hood while you're fasting so I had a fairly large set of labs taken about a day into the fast for an unrelated thing involving exosomes but what I'm going to do is see if I can get my doctors to take my blood again and run that exact set of labs and then we could have kind of bookends of the beginning of the fast to the end of The Fast and what happened with my lab work and if I can get that I can share that with you guys but anyway the tldr is 11 days no calories at all no food no like well we start eating at night or we have some juice or something no there's zero calories for 11 days there's no input into the system it's all output guess what there's a lot of stored energy here and I'm doing great doing fine mental energy is great Skin's looking better feeling feeling fine and again your experience with fasting is life is horrible life is horrible third day and then it starts going up again up but again up again and then you reach a peak and then you start declining slowly on the tail that's your wave down up slow just like that okay well anyway this was Charles hoskinson broadcasting live and if you guys have any other fasting related questions I'm sure that plenty of people will comment and of course I'll try to post some links including how to break a fast which I think is the single most important thing to do cheers
