Overzealous?

hey everybody this is Charles Hoskinson broadcasting live from warm sunny Colorado always warm always sunny sometimes Colorado hey I saw some floating ride telegram there was an article written today that's it was asking the question pondering the question are we being too overzealous in our defensive cardinal pointing specific examples of were again a bit of a tussle with Chinese marketer and a bit of a tussle with crypto briefing about a circle they recently wrote yeah that's going to give a road to get here guys five years work and during that time period let's be honest we have been as a community really treated unfairly we've been pissed on on scam scam scam scam scam no working product just the wallet just this everything that could be said has been said and in particular crypto media has gotten it wrong a lot for example some people were writing articles even recently this year saying that we have very low developer volume even though we were never one for commits why because they were tracking crypto me so and that was tracking a deprecated repo and they didn't look at the other twenty repos that we were actively committing to I mean this stuff comes up and there's just so much misinformation opinion conflation of fact with opinion in this space and here's the reality we had the Shelley summit and it showed the world that those who took a very bearish contrarian position on card otto are wrong we as an ecosystem are here to stay we're gonna keep growing we're gonna keep delivering and we're gonna have a great product and market and we already have a great product to market and it's not just a company it's a community and that community is quite large vibrant smart and competitive we're in it to win it we want to change the world we want to give billions of people economic identities or plan a different game than most people are and it's very hard if you're a podcast or an opinion maker or journalist and you've taken a very very very different opinion on that matter to then walk that back because you lose credibility with your audience this is where from arrangement syndrome came from horrible human being a lot of problems with them but everybody just kind of wrote him off and then what he won everybody went a little crazy about that and said we have to remediate this Grievous mistake well similarly there is a bit of a cardinal derangement syndrome in the cryptocurrencies speights people said our ideas will never work will never deliver will never actually ship anything we've never actually accomplished anything they just sometimes misrepresent reality completely for example they say things like or an c20 token which has never been true in the history of the project they say things like proof of state can never work and they ignore all the research we've done for 5 plus years the peer-review process is no good and it's apparently all of academia is broken and no science is justified through that entire process that every choice we've made is wrong the more we deliver if they've already taken a public position in that respect then they have two options three options they can apologize and say they're wrong and some will they can say nothing and wait until we make a mistake and that attack us for that or they can actually just deny reality and continue with what they've been saying all along the Cardinal summit was so prominent and had so much attention so many people chipping away at that that it became so hard for them to say that jelly hasn't shipped it came so hard for them to say there's not a real community there's not a real product there so now we're in the apology or silent stage waiting for mistakes and yeah every now and then I'm gonna kick people in the teeth on Twitter it's my style I'm Italian my grandmother's tell me it's Who I am it's where I come from it's how I think yeah I've moderated it a lot over the time and yeah Carrie now and then I insert my foot my mouth I'll be the first to admit that but the reason why I do this is because I fight for my community it is unfair to say that the hundreds of thousands of people that have chosen to get behind cardano's be part of our ecosystem are part of a scam or our defrauding people or are lying to people and when people assert in a direct or indirect or soft way for example all of our recent success in the appreciation or growth of our community is due to defraud and farmers in China you damn right I'm gonna kick you in the teeth and any reasonable person would do that because it's not a criticism levy towards me the reality is when people criticize me I fear is seldom respond unless it's a big credible actor in the space in which case I say come on let's be fair it's a criticism levied against the entire integrity of the project and if that becomes the narrative that lie propagates then what happens is it damages our ability to get adoption using utility and it damages our market perception so yeah we need to hit back sometimes I do it probably shouldn't but I do because I'm passionate about this I'm passionate about my community and I'll never apologize for fighting for them there are good people here I made them every single day I Iraq with them every single day they come from all wakes of life all ranges of age this is the first time in my life where I have gotten a letter on a project from a six-year-old to a letter in a project from a 91 year old written on a typewriter for the same context of support of the ecosystem the six-year-old was written with a creme so there's diversity here and these aren't numbers these are human beings and people who have chosen to get on the train and it's all of our job to defend our ecosystem and if person comes and says our strategy is wrong our protocols are wrong we have issues with all kinds of market adoption or whatever that might be I'm willing to have that debate and it's gonna be a fun civil debate and you saw it with Masari when we were talking about aetherium adoption and in the best of times it's a lot of fun for everybody and we at least can agree to disagree but if someone takes a position that we are defrauding people we're a scam or lying to people there is no debate or conversation here no one should have to defend themselves against allegations with no evidence ask yourself how would you feel if somebody came up to you and said so when did you stop beating your wife when did you stop being a child molester when did you stop committing crimes you say excuse me who the hell are you and why are you saying these things but this seems to be the standard discourse amongst certain circles within our industry and this is an industry-wide problem if we can't disagree without resorting to attacks on care and integrity then what ends up happening is that no one wants to jump on board cryptocurrencies you see we have to ask herself why would a government entrust its elections to our systems why would people entrust their money to our systems why would people entrust our property to our systems if any single time someone enters in and they have five thousand options they pick one of those five thousand options the other four thousand nine hundred ninety nine of them say that they're criminals and they're dishonest immoral people and they're being bamboozled and defrauded at the best-case or complicit in a scam at the worst case well dad does it just destroys all adoption in our industry as a whole so we have to be better as an industry we have to be better at dealing with scams I mean bad and financial incentives but we also have to be better in discourse in conduct I will freely admit there are times I've been too harsh not fair not empathetic enough reacted too quickly and that happens from time to time on the other hand we have to accept that sometimes it's a two-way relationship and it's not okay to say that our community is a bad community it's not okay to say our community's dishonest or our products don't exist we prove to the world that they did we proven the world that they did through github through our papers to the formal methods to the software you can download and verify yourself some of my best moments have been well I've had professional engineers and scientists who had a very negative opinion of our project because they heard it from a osore theory and more kaizo source community member there and so it's a very exotic laborat scam and they say oh this is going to be fun to write tell-all blog post about how bad of a scam this is because they have the skills to actually look and do proper due diligence and for those people to actually look at our github repos actually read our code and install our software read our papers and then leave sank guys there's nothing here it's it's the real deal these guys are ahead of everyone else and I see a lot of that these days a lot of people are giving us a second look at a second chance for my part I'll I'll stop spiking the football as much as I had it's it's been an incredibly enjoyable two to show to the entire space that they need to re-evaluate their position and your I it's probably good to dial it back a little bit man copla there on the other hand I will never apologize for kicking people in the teeth that call my community bad or us a scam or these things that there's just no room for that discourse anymore in our space and if we want to continue propagating that then all it's going to do is reduce our ability to get adoption using utility and reduce our ability to navigate and increase the likelihood that this entire space will be co-opted by professional actors the Amazons and the Microsoft's and the IBM's because they're the only adults in the room to take it over and do you honestly believe that they'll carry with them the same values that we have as an ecosystem probably not so it is what it is you take the good with the bad but I did want to make a video about being overzealous there is a time to celebrate and we earned it we won the Super Bowl at a certain respect five years to build something and a lot of hands touching it and a lot of work touching it that is not an easy concept and this has been hell for our employees for our ecosystem for the just amount of criticism that we have received and people had to stay stoic silent and diligent throughout all of that that's not easy it really is not and somehow we have managed to to get to a point where not only have we delivered but we have delivered with enough certainty that we believe that we can truly change things not just in our industry but with the world with the way that we're doing things it'll take time take years lots of effort lots of debate equally mounts of hard work and I'll be along for the ride one way or another because I this is my life's work I've always said that but I'd like to celebrate that a little bit and for people to just say hey that was a good thing and by the way all the code is open all the papers are open-source we never once filed for a patent while our competitors in this industry many of them pursued patents many of them said our ecosystem they try to build things in a way to lock people in the continuation of Cardno is a benefit to every single person in the cryptocurrency space whether we succeed as a project long-term or not we are leaving behind foundations that will fundamentally transform the way things work in our industry and hopefully the world or showing people how to do liquid democracy we're showing people how to do blockchain base governance we're showing people how to do a much better UT Excel model the extended UT Excel we're showing people how to do on chain and off chain how to do native assets how to do proper side chains at some point how to do state channels with Hydra we're showing people all these great things those are not the Dominion of card no we are the first mover and the entity trailblazing all of that but it's the smart cow effect once one smart cow figures out how to open up the paddock all the cows get out similarly once one company knows how to do this this becomes knowledge of the Commons so every single project benefits from that so we have to take our egos aside especially in the media I own ego as well and take a step back and reset it's a call for that and say what the past is the past let it go statements of the statements let it go it's time for everybody to get serious and professional as an ecosystem we need to do better and we need to write better stories we need to treat each other better and we need to communicate better it's okay to disagree and we should disagree but we should then be productive about the disagreements and talk a lot about trade-offs and what we value versus what other people value and in that because we have different values we'll discover that it's not that we're disagreeable it's rather that we just think and look at the world a bit differently perhaps this is too much to ask but if we want to be successful if we truly do want to see our ecosystems become trillion-dollar-plus platforms with hundreds of millions of users and taking over the elections of countries this is the entry requirement it is a standard we have to meet as an industry should we not meet it the industry will be co-opted by large companies who already have achieved this and those companies will take the industry in that direction and they will not have the same values that we started with from Bitcoin so do understand that and do understand this as nothing to do about Cardno in that respect and also do understand that when I reply back to a lot of these things it's because they are direct attacks from high distribution channels usually a hundred thousand two hundred thousand plus readers which are levying allegations against their community which are blatantly unfair again it's okay for us to have a difference of opinion it's not okay to call us criminals we've been here for five years everybody else has gone off to do different things they're on their third or fourth or fifth project very few people stick with it this long and we have clearly demonstrated the ecosystem that we can't ship and continue to do so in fact we had a release today so overzealous perhaps justified that's your call but in any event I'm passionate about you guys I'm passionate about this community and I honestly do believe that we as an ecosystem have every right to win it just we have to earn it and we have to be better as with my prior video we have to be better about scams and with this video the conduct and discourse has to be better on our side we'll try a lot harder especially through the foundation to reach out to other ecosystems we've historically had not the best of relationships with there's some personal history there and for my part I'm perhaps responsible it was certainly app for that and of course will try to have good conversations and volterra will definitely help us build the tools and systems to do that and these are not tools and systems exclusive to us these are tools and systems unique to the entire ecosystem in fact just today tweeted to Charlie Lee I'd love to work with litecoin and work on cross-chaining interoperability be fun project they think about it we think about it why not there's a lot of things to do there and if we get it right there it'd be easy to get into Bitcoin cash and easy to get into Bitcoin itself better for all of us and work together alright until next
